  1. The Glass Castle
The characters of The Glass Castle I can most certainly relate with. Their struggle to survive, adventures with moving around the country as well as their family tragedies. I found the plot line to be the most intriguing. This being because of the literal roller-coaster-ride of a life that the Walls family endured. From drunken parents, to kids fending for themselves The Glass Castle provides more than a vital awakening to, what I consider, the true reality of a lot of American’s lives today. This, along with the well rounded and selfless character of Jeannette. She matured very young, and had to help her other siblings fend for themselves. She, in my opinion is the hero of then entire story.

    1. In response to Caitlin Kundz’s comment (Glass Castle), I agree with all of the genuine points that she has made. When she said the plot was the most intriguing piece of the story to her, it made me think a little bit deeper about the plot and how the plot is organized in a way to affect the readers in a significant way. Another point that Caitlin made that I agreed with is the fact that she thinks Jeannette is the hero of the story. Caitlin also makes a great connection between the book and contemporary Americans’ lives and it made me think about the story’s authentic content.

  2. I just completed reading the memoir on Nelson Mandela's autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. Nelson Mandela's story is very inspiring and it really makes one think about how significant his role was on his country, on civil rights, and on the whole world. Nelson Mandela has a very respectable character and the excerpt gives a pretty good representation of his character traits. Examples of some of his character traits revealed in the excerpt alone are his courage, passion (or patriotism love for his country), and devotion. I think Nelson Mandela has a unique view point and I think his view adds to his respectable story telling ability. The expert actually really enticed me to want to read the book.

  3. Gum-Dipped sounds like a very compelling story and the setting is the piece of the excerpt that caught my eye. The story is set in Akron, Ohio, which is only about four hours from Brookville. I have been to Akron before and the fact that the story is set in Akron makes the story sound even more interesting to me personally. The plot honestly sounds a bit depressing but I think it has great promise to provide valuable themes.

  4. The Glass Castle is a classic story about true hardships and how a family is affected by the hardships and how the family overcomes the many obstacles placed before them. The story appears to be very applicable to real life situations. The characters in the story are obviously going to be dynamic if they face a hardship then overcome that hardship and possibly learning a valuable lesson or it changes their character. I think that the story will have very detailed language and will provide lots of imagery to depict how difficult the hardship is for the characters both mentally and physically.

  5. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls:
I agree with Jeanette’s mother’s opinion on Jeanette having her morals confused. When Jeanette sees her mother picking through a Dumpster on the street, Jeanette ducks into a cab and runs away from her mother. If my mother became homeless and I saw her picking through trash I would probably run up to her, throw my arms around her and tell her I love her. So, I think Jeanette has a good plot going here because it makes you think about what you would do. The plot also reminds you that stuff like people kind of enjoying being homeless and traveling and picking through trash can happen.

    Ava’s Man by Rick Braggs
Ava is a very strong-willed woman who loves her husband very much, but is also very angry with him a lot. She is hotheaded and apparently explains a lot about the family. I think that it’s funny that Rick comments about how his family has been so stubborn that they haven’t really progressed in character through the generations.

Gum-Dipped: A Daughter Remembers Firestone Park by Joyce Dyer
I think that this memoir has a good theme in the section that I read. The theme, from what I gathered, was that you can believe in something so much that you can become blind to what’s really going on. It’s all like Santa Claus, you believe in him when you’re little and you make excuses for all the impossible things that in your mind become possible, but then you grow up and realize that all the impossible things really are impossible. It’s all very depressing, but you learn from it, you grow, you move on.

    1. In response to her comment about The Glass Castle, I completely agree. If I saw my mother digging through a dumpster for me, I would never forget that ultimate act of caring. It would inspire me to be more like that to the other people I care about.

  6. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
The thing about today's culture is that people are captivated by stories of struggle and regrowth. It gives hope to their own lives and problems that are on a smaller scale. The Walls family is no exception. When a family is reduced to nothing but the love they have for each other, they have the strength to overcome most of anything. A true story like this is instantly a captivating classic.

  7. Ava's Man:
Ava's Man is one of those "everyone who knew him was lucky" kind of stories where a selfless hard worker does everything he can to keep his family in front of poverty. His deeds are a shining example of how all families should behave toward one another. Small examples like this in today's families reflect the attitude Charlie had on a larger scale.

  8. Gum-Dipped: A Daughter Remembers Firestone Park:
This story has a tone of innocence, with seemingly satisfactory living situations masked by poisonous acts and corrupt situations. Children often never see behind that mask, and it takes growing up to realize what was actually going on,and I think that has happened at least once to everyone.

  9. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
I feel as though the characters in The Glass Castle are very relatable, because you can really tell how the tragedy around them influences their family and life. There are so many ups & downs in the story that you find it interesting to read. I don’t know what I would have done in Jeanette’s position, if I saw my mother digging through the trash. Jeanette runs away from her, but I don’t think I could ever leave my mother there. I think the story shows you that even if life is hard, it is possible to make the best out of a bad situation.

  10. In Ava’s Man I think it shows different aspects of life, and of love. Ava has a clear, strong opinion but her love for her husband is also very apparent. I think that her temper, and demeanor tells a lot about her family as a whole. I think her husband’s actions towards his family show how he loves them; he does all he can to keep his family safe and out of the poverty around them. I think his attitude and love shows how much his family really does matter to him.
